CBC Subjects in Junior Secondary List After New Merging Released.
Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms released a new recommendation that the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD) reduce the CBC subjects in both primary and Junior secondary schools.
Following the recommendations, Home Science, Health Education as well as Integrated Science subjects in primary school will be merged into one learning Area.
The move is meant to change the current structure of learning whereby each one of the three areas of studies is treated as a separate subject/ learning area.
Designers for the curriculum are also planning to combine social studies and life skills that according to them are also viewed as independent disciplines areas under the CB curriculum.
Comprehensively, the CBC subjects in lower primary subjects lowered from nine to seven, for the upper primary from 12 to eight subjects .
In addition, the junior school subjects will reduce from 14 to nine as those for the pre-primary will move to five as senior remains with seven.
Charles Ong’ondo, KICD CEO revealed that the subjects being merged have many related learning areas.
Ongondo added that in a critical look, KICD realized that there are some concepts that are related and as a result there is need for considered for merging .
He added that for instance, instead of having integrated science and health education as two different subjects, we can only have integrated science
Under the primary level, Home Science as well as Health Education will have the content channeled into integrated science.
However, KICD suggests that the students will have an opportunity to choose the ninth subject based on their aptitude in that subject.
Learners in the Junior Secondary presently tackle 14 subjects as 12 are compulsory.
KICD curriculum projects a weekly total number of lessons at 45 as each one of them lasts for 40 minutes.
With the indigenous languages, learners will cover English, Kiswahili, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Health Education, Pre-Technical and Pre-Career Social Studies, Religious Studies, Business Studies, Agriculture, Life Skills, Physical Education, Sports, and Foreign Languages (German, French, and Mandarin subjects.
