On the other hand , those who will train as a secondary school teacher, they must have a general grade of C plain and a C+ (plus) in two subjects.
The above changes follows suit of the recommendations that were presented by the Presidential Working Party on Education Reforms (PWPER) .
Kenya Teachers Colleges Principals’ Association (KTCPA) through their chairperson,Paul Barasa had urged the Ministry of Education to send circulars to TTCs to allow them to adopt the revised entry specifications.
While issuing a speech, Barasa said that the revised entry requirements are very important for the country because ateacher has to master the content of a subject in which they train.
According to Barasa, this means that, one has to have achieved a higher grade in the subject they want to teach in schools.
Barasa added that in the beginning the grade was was still a C plus in the subject but now it has been reduced from a C plus to a C plain in the average score.
A number of the education stakeholders indicated that the revised entry requirements will sort out the TTCs that are struggling with low enrolment to boost the number of pre-service teachers.
It was also revealed that Some TTCs have enrolments of less than 20 students following the learner failing to meet the requirements.
Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu also revealed that inadequate budgetary allocations, low payment of fees by parents as well as low enrolment are major challenges facing TTCs.
Machogu also expressed optimism that the revised admission requirements for TTCs is expected to boost the number of training teachers in the country.
