List of Two schools in Kisii Where teachers Idle Due to Lack of Learners
Two schools, Nchoro and Karungu Secondary Schools both found in Mugirango South Constituency are facing the threat of closure due to following a low enrollment of student numbers.
Reports indicate that at Karungu Secondary School, the deputy principal mr. Geoffrey Monyancha said the school currentlythr school has only 63 students, that are distributed in many different forms:
According to Geoffrey, there are
- 12 learners in form 1,
- 15 learners in form 2,
- 15 learners in form 3
- 21 learners in form 4.
As to the deputy head of this institution, the main reason for the low enrollment rate is that the Ministry of Education has not provided for enough capitation or funding. This situation is said to have forced students to choose schools with better facilities.
Mr. Monyancha further pointed out that capitation funds are directly linked to student numbers, hence making it necessary for parents to support their local schools rather than favoring institutions with superior infrastructure.
It should be noted that the District Education Board (CEB) temporarily closed the school for the first term due to a lack of students when the school reopened.
Following a request from parents, learning in the school resumed with only 50 students, served by 9 teachers appointed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).
Under this situation, the CEB chair Professor Henry Onderi criticized the inconvenient teacher-to-student ratio, saying that this is a waste of human resources when the government pays salaries to inactive teachers.
According to Onderi , much blame goes to the parents who enrolled their children in neighborhood schools instead of supporting their community schools.
At the beginning of second term, the Associate Professor. Mr. Onderi and his team disbanded the school management committee following perceived incompetence.
This school faces school faces persistently low student numbers, hence making closure increasingly likely.
Onderi further said that he reopened the school for a short time so that parents could consult and contribute support.
Just Incase the situation continues like this ,there is another possibility of closure and the remaining students being transferred to alternative schools.
Some of the concerned parents now claim that a permanent closure of schools would place a significant burden on area students, who would have to travel long distances to get to nearby schools.
