Nakhumicha Reveals Cause of Disease Outbreak at Mukumu Girls
Research has indicated that students at Mukumu Girls High School were likely exposed to contaminated water for an extended period of time something that lead to disease outbreak in March this year.
This is according to Health CS Susan Nakhumicha.
Details from the environmental assessment conducted at the institution indicated that the parallel flow of sewage,the spring water plus the piped water presented a significant risk leading to the high chances of water contamination.
CS Nakhumicha indicated that there was improper waste disposal plus blockage of sewage flow something that lead to overflow and spillage into the spring and staff quarters were also risk factors.
Nakhumicha further added that the large number of students also put a strain on the school’s infrastructure.
The CS further added her submissions to the National Assembly that saying that all the hostels had exceeded 100 percent of the necessary bed capacity, something that also contributed to overcrowding.
Earlier March this year, Nakhumicha had appeared before the National Assembly to clarify the circumstances which surrounded the outbreak of an unidentified disease at Mukumu Girls High School in Kakamega County.
It was confirmed that 3 students plus one teacher died and over one hundred students were hospitalized.
CS further indicated that the investigating team collected numerous samples of human food plus water.
The cs said that the laboratory results for human samples, which included stool, the blood plus postmortem tissue cultures, indicated the presence of multiple disease-causing microorganisms.
