North Eastern Non-local TSC Teachers Issue Demands before Resuming work .
The teachers employed by the teachers service commission that are stationed at North Eastern ( Non-local Teachers ) have issued Demands before Resuming Duties
Most of these teachers are from the outside of the northern regions of Kenya who have been asking for protection from the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) before starting their jobs.
These teachers have also requested to be relocated to other areas were denied.
Others have also asked TSC to issue them with transfers through the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) following the fact that they face frequent attacks by suspected al-Shabaab militants.
According to Moses Nthurima who serves as the Deputy Secretary-General of Kuppet, there are indeed serious security threats these foreign teachers face due to al-Shabaab’s presence.
Nthurima also said that in the past decade, the al-Shabaab has been responsible for the deaths of 40 teachers and with the four such incidents happening in the last two months.
Kenya’s northern part is categorized as a “hard-to-staff” region by the teachers service commission,in which schools often lack sufficient staff.
During recruitment and posting, these areas receive few applications.
Inorder to curb this , Nthurima has called for Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, to ensure establishment of a dedicated KDF unit responsible for escorting teachers in the region.
This should be particularly in vulnerable settlements so as to ensure their safety. It was further stressed that teachers should not bear the costs resulting from security issues.
