TSC Programme for Teachers Aged Fifties
The teachers employer (TSC) has issued a retirement program that targets teachers aged fifty years and above. In reference to a memo directed to county and sub-county directors, TSC has mandated the identification of suitable venues that will oversee the retirement awareness program.
In the course of this week and the next, the commission has organized for teachers to gather at locations designated within their respective sub-counties inorder to be taken through the sensitization program.
The new TSC program coincides with efforts by members of parliament which saw a draft legislation that would compel the retirement of teachers other civil servants aged fifty-five and above.
It is projected that approximately 85,000 teachers and civil servants are expected to retire in the next three financial years, hence placing significant pressure on taxpayers as pension expenses are projected to reach nearly Sh210 billion annually during this period.
As captured under Section 80(1)(a) and (b) of the Public Service Commission Act 2017,a Public Officer must retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age, that is presently set at 60 years and 65 years for individuals with disabilities.
Following the parliamentary committee review, it was considered to lower the mandatory retirement age from 60 to 55, so as to create more opportunities for young individuals in the public service.
Back on August 3, National Assembly’s Labor committee had a discussion the Public Service Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2023 which saw an expression of intentions to amend the legislation to establish a retirement age of 55.
Most members of Parliament MPs advocated for this reduction in age, emphasizing the need to prioritize the youth’s employment prospects.
