CURRENT NHIF SCRAP APPROVED AND BE REPLACED BY 3 NEW FUNDS
Under the latest move that is meant to see effort to hasten the implementation of universal health coverage, the current NHIF scrap has been approved by the government and is to be replaced with 3 new distinct funds.
These new funds will include ;
- the Primary Healthcare Fund
- The Social Health Insurance Fund
- The Emergency, Chronic and Critical Illness Fund.
Creation of the above three funds was as a result of reorganizing the entire health expenditure of Sh550 billion. This is according to the press release from the State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed.
Mohamed further pointed out that the exchequer will provide funding for the Primary Care Fund as usual.
On the other hand, the current cabinet also decided to establish maize prices to protect farmers in the Central regions, the Eastern part Coast, South Rift part as well as Nyanza regions from losses due to the anticipated record harvest.
Agreement on the same has been reached to determine a reasonable price for the produce. This is a part of the report from the inaugural cabinet meeting held outside of Nairobi at the Kakamega State Lodge.
It was also agreed that the government needs to protect farmers from post-harvest losses by giving them access to mobile dryers.The driers will assist the farmers have access to high-quality and reasonably priced inputs so as to ensure food supply in the future.
The government further promised to spend at least one million dollars on bags of maize to keep in the country’s Strategic Food Reserve.
Also the Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development accepted to declare the off-take price for the crop for the year 2023 following a consultation with all parties in accordance with the regulations.
Ruto’s meeting further gave the Ministry of Agriculture a number of instructions on how to make sure that maize for strategic reserves is stored properly as well to avoid wastage of the same.
