Teachers in Hardship Areas will soon get a Pay Increase
It is a great joy to teachers in some selected places following a new plan on getting generous hardship allowances
There has been some allegations that not all teachers in the Taita Taveta hardship areas received relief money , something that prompted senators to launch an investigation.
According to the Senate directive, Taita Taveta branch of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) has been directed to rule that all teachers in the county are entitled to hardship allowance, and reference to be made as ody July 13, 2021, collective agreement between the Teachers Service Commission,
These teachers in the county do receive hardship grants from KNUT, the Kenya Association of Post-Primary Teachers and the Kenya Association of Special Education Teachers.
Despite the Legal Notice No. 534 of 1997 and the collective agreement dated July 13, 2021, Taita Taveta branch of KNUT still claims that not all teachers in the district get hardship compensation.
The above association indicate that TSC only provided hardship allowances to teachers in Voi and a small part of Mwatate sub-district, ignoring many other areas.
Teachers’ union said that teachers in these areas need subsidies to protect them from unrest caused by stray animals roaming Tsavo National Park, as well as exorbitant water prices plus the poor access to roads.
In addition, there is lack of rental housing near schools in these locations and teachers are overworked due to labor shortages. According to this organization, as a result of lack of medical facilities, teachers face high medical costs.
