Parliament Passes Bill to Lower Law Degree Requirements in Kenya.
The National Assembly ‘ budget and Appropriation has issued an approval to the progression of the Legal Education (Amendment) Bill 2023 that lowers the requirements for obtaining a law degree in the Kenya.
Latest changes were proposed Babu Owino the Embakasi East Member of Parliament. According to Owino, the move will eliminate the stubbornness in the current law which demands higher grades for students enrolling in Bachelor of Law (LLB) under the degree programs.
Owino suggested that the current requirements for one to have grade B in English or Kiswahili has hindered many students from registering for the course.
The revised requirements according to Parliament will now allow LLB graduates who do not have a B (Plain) in English or Kiswahili to be admitted to the Kenya School of Law for the advocates’ training program.
Owino further added that this change would facilitate access to legal education and the practice of law for many Kenyan students.
The current members of Parliament who have studied Law and Actuarial Science, expressed their concerns saying that previous requirement prevented potential legal practitioners from enrolling in the program.
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree requirements in Kenya differ from one university to another
The current standard requirements for those willing to persue a degree in law include a mean grade of C+ (Plus) or its equivalent on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent.
Also a Student willing to enroll in the program must also have scored at least a B (Plain) in either English or Kiswahili on the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education KCSE examinations.
At.the same time , the program allows students who possess a minimum of three Principal Passes on the Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education exam (KACE).
On the other hand, prospect students may also start begin their law studies at the Diploma level as they later advance to a Degree program upon obtaining a passing grade on an examination from an accredited learning institution.
