Universities to Receive Scholarships
The President of the republic of Kenya, William Ruto has announced a shift in his administration’s approach in the funding process for higher education.
In his new plan, the university funding model will be done through scholarships rather than giving grants.
In a statement, Ruto said that this year alone, the government is giving at least 45,000 university students 100 per cent scholarships as others will receive 90 per cent and 80 per cent.
Ruto further highlighted that his administration is commitment to creating sustainable education in the country and as a result addressing persistent issues within the sector.
There a problem in the education sector as a result many children from impoverished backgrounds do lack opportunities to attend TVETs or universities.
As a result there is need to change hence the strive for equitable and accessible education,” Ruto emphasized .
In July this year, the government introduced the New Higher Education Funding model which encompassing scholarships and loans for students placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service.
The above initiative, as prompted by Ruto’s directive on May 3, 2023, will aim at revamping the higher education student funding model, hence aligning placement, the government scholarships, as well as loans with students’ needs and program costs. students admitted to universities and TVET institutions through the KUCCPS placement are eligible for funding.
The new funding allocation will be determined by four criteria which will include the program selection, the household income, the performance as well as government priority areas.
